Temporary Learner Driver Insurance

cover in the learner’s own name for practising in somebody else’s car

A standalone policy in a learner’s name covering practice in somebody else’s car. It requires a provisional licence and a supervising driver who meets the policy’s conditions, and a claim normally falls on it rather than the owner’s annual policy.

  • In the learner’s own name
  • Supervision is a condition
  • Ends when you pass
  • FCA authorised and regulated

Quick answerTemporary learner driver insurance lets somebody on a provisional licence practise in a car that belongs to a parent, a partner or a friend. It is a policy in the learner’s own name, so a claim normally falls on it rather than on the car owner’s annual cover. The two conditions that matter are supervision and the moment you pass. Tell us the dates and UK providers can come back with quotes.

Learner Cover, in Brief

Six things that decide how temporary learner driver insurance behaves, before any of the detail.

The policy is in the learner’s name
Not an addition to the owner’s
The owner’s bonus is usually protected
A claim falls on the learner’s policy
A supervising driver is required
Who has to meet the policy conditions

It ends the moment you pass
Arrange the next cover before you drive away

The instructor’s own policy covers those

The basics

What Is Temporary Learner Driver Insurance?

A full motor policy with a short life, written for somebody who has not passed yet. It covers practice in a named car, under supervision, and it stops being valid the instant the licence changes.

Third-party cover

Injury to others and damage to their property.

Fire and theft

Included on a comprehensive policy.

Comprehensive cover

Damage to the car being practised in.

Standalone status

Independent of the owner’s annual policy.

Supervision terms

Conditions the supervising driver has to meet.

A fixed start and end

Chosen when you buy it.

How it works

How Does Temporary Learner Driver Insurance Work?

You give the learner’s details and the car’s, choose how long you need, and cover runs for that period under the supervision conditions.

  1. You describe the learner

Age, provisional licence and how long they have held it.

  2. You describe the car

Registration, model and value, and whose it is.

  3. You confirm the supervision

Who will sit alongside and whether they qualify.

  4. You choose the period

Days, weeks or a month in the run-up to a test.

What it covers

What Does Temporary Learner Driver Insurance Cover?

Ordinary motor cover written around one situation: a provisional licence holder practising in a car somebody else owns, with somebody qualified beside them.

Cover ends the moment you pass. The policy is written for a provisional licence, so it stops being valid as soon as the licence changes. Arrange what comes next before you drive away from the test centre.

Exclusions

What Temporary Learner Driver Insurance Does Not Include

Learner policies are tightly drawn, and the conditions are about who is in the car as much as what is being driven.

Driving without a qualified supervisor

Supervision is the central condition.

Driving alone on a provisional licence

Not permitted, and not insured.

Motorway driving where it is not allowed

Only with an approved instructor in a dual-control car.

Drivers outside the age or licence terms

Both the learner and the supervisor are checked.

Anything after you pass

Cover stops when the licence changes.

Driving while unfit

Under the influence of drink or drugs.

Ways learners get covered

The Three Ways a Learner Gets Insured

There are only really three routes, and which suits depends on whose car it is and whose bonus is at stake.

A temporary policy in the learner’s name

Practice in somebody else’s car.

Added to the owner’s annual policy

As a named learner driver.

The learner’s own annual policy

Where they own the car themselves.

Driving school lessons

Covered by the instructor, not by you.

Short cover before a test

A few days of intensive practice.

Monthly learner cover

For a longer run-up to the test.

Who it suits

Who Temporary Learner Driver Insurance Suits

It is bought by families, in the main, and usually by the person whose car is about to be driven by somebody who has not passed yet.

Learners practising in a parent’s car

The commonest arrangement by far.

Parents protecting their bonus

The main reason to choose this route.

Learners in the run-up to a test

A burst of practice.

Learners borrowing a friend’s car

With permission.

Mature learners

Passing later in life.

Learners supplementing lessons

Practice between instructor sessions.

Own policy or named driver

A Policy in the Learner’s Name vs Adding Them to Yours

This is the real comparison, and for most families it turns on one thing: whose no claims bonus is exposed if the learner has a knock.

Cost

What Temporary Learner Driver Insurance Is Priced On

The learner, the car, how long you need and the supervision arrangement. We do not print average premiums.

Why the car matters more than you expect

A learner has no record to read, so the vehicle carries more of the assessment than it would for an experienced driver. A smaller, lower group car is both easier to place and easier to learn in.

Why the supervising driver is checked

The person sitting alongside is part of the risk. Insurers set conditions on their age and how long they have held a full licence, and those conditions are checked after an incident rather than before.

The details

The Conditions That Decide a Learner Policy

Learner cover is straightforward to buy and easy to void. Four conditions come up again and again.

  1. Always drive with a qualified supervisor

The supervising driver has to meet the age and licence conditions the policy sets.

  2. Never drive alone

A provisional licence does not permit it, and no learner policy covers it.

  3. Arrange new cover before you pass

The policy ends when the licence changes, including on the drive home from the test.

  4. Check the car is eligible

Value, group and age limits all apply, and driving school cars are excluded.

Quote checklist

What You Will Be Asked for a Learner Driver Quote

Six things shape the quote: the learner, the car, the supervisor, how long you need it, where it is kept, and anything on the record.

The car

Registration, model, value and whose car it is.

The drivers

Everyone who will drive, and their licences.

Claims and convictions

Recent claims and any motoring convictions.

How it is used

Social, commuting or business, and mileage.

Where it is kept

Postcode and overnight parking.

The supervising driver

Age and how long they have held a full licence.

Comparing

Checking Learner Driver Quotes Side by Side

Four areas decide whether a policy suits you: the cover, the excess, the supervision terms and the period terms. The price is only one of them.

The cover

  • Level of cover and courtesy car
  • Windscreen cover
  • Driving other cars

The excess

  • Compulsory excess
  • Voluntary excess
  • Windscreen excess

The learner terms

  • Supervising driver conditions
  • What happens the day you pass
  • Whether the car qualifies

Terms

  • No claims bonus protection
  • European driving
  • Paying monthly or upfront

Ask what happens on the day of the test. Cover ends the moment the licence changes. Unfamiliar terms are explained in our plain English jargon guide.

Cutting costs

How to Reduce the Cost of Temporary Learner Driver Insurance

The levers are the car you learn in, the period you buy and the excess. We publish no savings figures.

Learn in a lower group car

It moves the price furthest.

Buy the right length at the start

Two short policies cost more than one.

Choose the excess deliberately

A higher voluntary excess is a lever, worth using only at a level you could pay.

Compare against a named driver

For a long run-up to the test.

Declare everything up front

A refused claim costs far more.

Look at telematics after passing

It often suits a new driver.

FAQs

Temporary Learner Driver Insurance FAQs

Answers on supervision, the car owner’s bonus, passing your test and eligibility.

What is temporary learner driver insurance?

A short policy in the learner’s own name that covers them practising in a car belonging to somebody else. It runs for days, weeks or a month, and it exists mainly so the car owner’s annual policy is left untouched.

Will a claim affect the car owner’s no claims bonus?

Normally not, and that is the main reason families use it. Because the learner holds their own policy, a claim falls on that rather than on the annual cover protecting the car and its owner.

Do I need somebody with me?

Always. A provisional licence does not permit driving alone, and no learner policy covers it. The supervising driver has to meet the conditions the policy sets on their age and how long they have held a full licence.

What happens when I pass?

The cover ends at that moment, because it was written for a provisional licence. That includes the drive home from the test centre, so arrange what comes next beforehand rather than on the day.

Can I use it on a driving school car?

No. Instructors insure their own vehicles, and dual-control cars are outside these policies entirely. Learner cover is for private cars belonging to family or friends.

Can I practise on a motorway?

Only with an approved driving instructor in a car with dual controls. Practice with a family supervisor is not permitted on motorways, and a learner policy will not cover it.

Whose car can I learn in?

Any private car you have permission to use, subject to the value, group and age limits the insurer sets. You do not have to be the registered keeper, and most learners practise in a parent’s car.

Is it better than being added to my parent’s policy?

For practice in their car, usually, because their bonus stays intact. Being added as a named learner can work out better over a long period, so it is worth pricing both if the test is months away.

How long can I cover?

Providers differ, but the usual range runs from a day at one end to a month or so at the other, with monthly arrangements available for a longer run-up. Cover can normally start within minutes.

Does it build a no claims bonus?

No. Years are earned on annual policies, so learner cover leaves you no further forward when you buy your first full year. That first policy after passing is where the record starts.

Is the car covered when the owner drives it?

By their own policy, as before. Your learner policy covers you driving it; theirs continues to cover them. The two sit alongside each other rather than replacing one another.

Can a mature learner get this cover?

Yes. It is written around the licence rather than the age, so anybody on a provisional can use it, subject to the upper and lower age limits the provider sets.

What if I fail the test?

Nothing changes. You are still on a provisional licence, so the cover continues to the end of the period you bought, and you can extend or buy again for more practice.

Do I need to tell the car owner?

Yes, and you need their permission. Insurers ask whose car it is, and arranging cover on a car you have no permission to drive would not survive a claim.

Is comprehensive cover included?

Usually, because lower levels are rarely offered on this kind of policy. That matters on a learner policy, since damage to the car you are practising in is the likeliest claim of all.

How do I compare learner quotes?

Look past the headline at the supervision conditions, the vehicle limits, the total excess and exactly when cover ends. A lower figure on a policy your supervisor does not qualify for is no use at all.
