Motorbike Courier Insurance

hire and reward cover for despatch riding, where the exposure is urban and constant

Hire and reward cover for a motorbike used to deliver goods for payment. It permits despatch and sameday work, sits beside goods cover for the load carried, and is rated on the rider, the hours and the city ridden.

  • Despatch and sameday work
  • Top box load covered separately
  • Urban riding rated
  • FCA authorised and regulated

Quick answerDespatch riding is paid carriage, so an ordinary motorbike policy will not answer a claim made on a job. A courier policy adds hire and reward use, and goods cover for the top box sits alongside it. The exposure is heavily urban: filtering traffic, constant stopping and a bike left at the kerb dozens of times a shift. Tell us the bike and the work, and specialist UK brokers can come back with quotes.

Riding food orders instead? Our delivery rider insurance page covers that work.

At a glance

Two Wheels on Delivery: Six Essentials

Six things that shape cover for a rider earning on the bike.

Paid carriage needs its own class
A private bike policy will not respond
The top box load is separate
Goods cover answers for what is in it
Hours matter more than miles
A shift is stop after stop
The city ridden is rated
Dense traffic changes the exposure
Theft is the standing risk
Bikes are lifted, not just stolen
Rider experience counts heavily
Years on two wheels are rewarded

The basics

Why a Bike Round Is Rated Its Own Way

A despatch rider is exposed for the whole shift rather than for a journey. Filtering, stopping, parking and remounting happen constantly, and that pattern rather than the machine is what an underwriter is pricing.

Hire and reward use

What permits the paid ride.

What goes in the box

Documents, parcels or food.

Hours ridden

Shift length and time of day.

Where you ride

City centre or wider region.

Rider history

Licence type and years held.

Where the bike is kept

Overnight security is rated.

How it works

Between the Enquiry and the Price

It is a quick form. The care goes into what you carry and how far, because those are the fields an underwriter reads first.

  1. Say what you deliver

It decides most of the price.

  2. Name the drivers

    Age and experience both count.

  3. Describe the work

Despatch runs, sameday documents, medical samples, parcels or food orders.

  4. Compare properly

Cover level, goods limit, excess and downtime.

What it covers

The Cover a Despatch Rider Actually Uses

Motorbike cover on hire and reward terms, with goods cover for what you are carrying and the add-ons that keep a rider earning when the bike is off the road.

Kit is worth asking about. Helmet, leathers, boots and the top box itself sit outside the motorbike sections on a good many policies, and for a rider who works in them every day the replacement cost is not trivial.

What it leaves out

The Rides That Sit Outside the Policy

The cover is for paid delivery work. What follows sits outside it, and the list is short enough to read properly.

Journeys outside the declared use

Including deliveries on a social policy.

Parcels damaged or stolen

Goods in transit answers for those.

Parts that simply fail

Age and mileage are not insured events.

Downtime after a claim

Unless you have bought cover for it.

Anyone not named or permitted

Round cover has to be arranged properly.

Riding a bike not named on the policy

Borrowed machines are a common gap.

Work a rider takes

The Work That Comes to a Despatch Rider

Riders take several kinds of job, and the mix describes the hours and the city far better than the word courier does.

Legal and document despatch

The traditional city work.

Medical and laboratory runs

Time-critical and conditioned.

Sameday parcels

Small items across a city.

Print and proof collection

Studios and agencies.

Food and restaurant orders

Evenings and weekends.

Platform and app riding

Jobs routed by phone.

Riding a smaller machine? See moped courier insurance.

Who it suits

Riders Earning on Two Wheels

Despatch riding is largely self-employed, and the people doing it range from career riders in the cities to part-timers filling evenings.

Career despatch riders

City work, years of it.

Legal circuit riders

Courts, chambers and firms.

Medical couriers on bikes

Hospital and lab runs.

Sameday subcontractors

Jobs from a control room.

Food riders on motorbikes

Busier evenings, shorter hops.

Part-time riders

A second income on two wheels.

Working entirely for yourself? See self-employed courier insurance.

Despatch or food

Sameday Despatch vs Evening Food Rounds

Both are paid carriage on two wheels, and they are rated differently because the hours and the streets are different.

Cost

What Lifts or Lowers a Rider Premium

The rider, the bike, the hours, the city and the claims record. We do not print average premiums.

Why rider years carry the quote

Experience on two wheels is the field underwriters trust most. Years of licensed riding, and years of riding for a living in particular, describe somebody who reads traffic in a way that a newly licensed rider on the same machine does not.

Why the city is asked about

Riding all day in dense central traffic is a heavier exposure than covering the same hours across a market town, and the postcode carries that distinction.

The details

Four Terms Every Rider Should Confirm

A short list, but the one that matters. An insurer will look at these first if you ever claim on a courier motorbike.

  1. Declare the work as delivery

Not as business use on a private policy.

  2. Review the goods limit

    Peak season loads are heavier.

  3. Keep drivers declared

Before the first drop, not after.

  4. Ride only machines on the policy

A borrowed bike is usually outside it.

Quote checklist

Have This Ready Before Quoting the Bike

This is the whole list. With it in front of you, a courier motorbike can be quoted in one conversation.

The goods carried

Despatch runs, sameday documents, medical samples, parcels or food orders.

Drivers and experience

Years behind the wheel.

Vehicle and equipment

Racking, cages, heated bags.

Overnight address

A garage, a locked yard, a driveway or the street.

Mileage

Realistic, not hopeful.

Cover sections needed

Including goods and liability.

Comparing

Setting Two Rider Quotes Side by Side

A lower price is only better if it does the same job. Check these before deciding.

The numbers

  • Cover level and excesses
  • Goods limit against a full load
  • Liability limits carried

The people

  • Who may drive under the policy
  • Age and experience conditions
  • How convictions have been rated

On this work specifically

  • Riding kit and helmet cover
  • Top box and load limit
  • Private riding included

Ask whether your kit is covered. Leathers and a helmet are not cheap to replace. Unfamiliar terms are explained in our plain English jargon guide.

Cutting costs

Paying Less to Ride for a Living

The levers are riding years, security, a clean licence and a sensible excess. We publish no savings figures.

Build unbroken riding years

Continuity is rewarded.

Secure the bike properly

Chains, ground anchors and covers.

Fit a tracker

Recovery odds matter on bikes.

Keep the licence clean

Points move a rider premium quickly.

Set the excess deliberately

Small claims are costly over time.

Compare every renewal

Rider appetite varies widely.

FAQs

Motorbike Courier Insurance FAQs

Answers on despatch work, top boxes, licences, food rounds and riding privately.

Can I do despatch work on a normal bike policy?

No. A private motorbike policy excludes carrying goods for payment, so it would not answer a claim made while you were working. Hire and reward use is the thing a courier policy adds, and it is the reason the cover exists.

Is what I carry in the top box insured?

Not by the motorbike sections. Goods cover answers for the load and is arranged alongside, sized to what you actually carry. For a rider moving legal papers or medical samples that limit deserves more thought than it usually gets.

Does my riding kit get replaced after an accident?

Sometimes, and it is worth checking. Helmet, leathers, gloves and boots are expensive, and some policies include them while others treat them as an add-on or leave them out entirely.

How much difference does riding experience make?

A great deal. Years of licensed riding, and courier riding in particular, are among the strongest factors on a quote. A newly licensed rider will find the market narrower and the price considerably higher for the same machine.

Can I ride the bike when I am not working?

Where social and domestic use has been added, which is usual on a courier policy but not automatic. Ask directly, because a policy written for work alone leaves your own riding uninsured.

Is food delivery riding priced like despatch?

Not quite. Food work concentrates into evenings and weekends with short, dense hops, where despatch runs through office hours across longer distances. Describe which you do rather than letting the pattern be assumed.

Do I need a particular licence category?

Whatever the machine requires. What an insurer looks at alongside it is how long you have held it, and a rider stepping straight onto a larger machine will be rated accordingly.

Is security worth investing in?

On a bike, yes. Theft is the standing exposure in this trade, and a chain, a ground anchor, a cover and a tracker all help, both with the premium and with getting the machine back.

Can I deliver on a private car policy?

No. Carrying goods for payment is excluded, so the policy would not answer a claim made on a job. It is the single most common and most expensive misunderstanding in delivery work.

Is the load insured by the van policy?

It is not. Goods in transit is a separate cover responding to the parcels, and without it a stolen load is your own cost to make good.

Does it cover me driving privately?

Where social use has been included, which is usual but not universal. Ask directly, because a quote written for delivery alone leaves your own driving out.

How are convictions treated?

They are rated rather than automatically refused, and specialist brokers deal with them routinely. What causes real problems is failing to mention one and having it surface after a claim.

What covers me while the vehicle is repaired?

A replacement vehicle section or loss of earnings cover. Neither is standard, and for a courier whose income stops with the vehicle they are usually worth more than a small saving on the premium.

Why does overnight parking matter so much?

Because that is where the vehicle spends most of its life, and a delivery van is a known target. Describe the actual arrangement rather than calling a street a driveway.

Can I put another driver on?

Yes, and shared rounds are normal. Each driver is rated separately, so adding a newly qualified one will move the price more than adding an experienced driver.

Does the type of work change the rating?

It does. Multi-drop parcels, food delivery and longer freight runs produce different stop counts and different load values, and insurers price the pattern rather than the job title.
