Moped Courier Insurance
hire and reward cover for a small-engine machine earning on a delivery round
Hire and reward cover for a moped used on paid delivery rounds. It permits carrying goods for payment, sits alongside cover for the load, and is rated on the rider, the hours worked and where the machine is kept.
- Small engines, urban rounds
- Owned or hired machines
- Theft is the main exposure
- FCA authorised and regulated
Quick answerA moped on delivery work needs hire and reward cover, exactly as a van does. What surprises riders is that a small engine does not produce a small premium: this work is urban, it runs into the evening, the machines are stolen constantly and the riders are often young. Those four facts do more to the price than the engine size. Tell us the machine and the round, and specialist UK brokers can come back with quotes.

Moped Delivery: Six Things to Know
Six things that shape cover for a small machine on a round.
- A small engine is not a small risk
- The round drives the price
- The work is dense and urban
- Short hops in busy streets
- Theft is the standing exposure
- Delivery machines are targeted
- Rider age matters here
- Many riders are newly licensed
- Evening hours are rated
- Food rounds run late
- The load still needs cover
- Even a single hot bag of orders
The basics
What a Small-Engine Round Asks of a Policy
The machine is modest and the exposure is not. A delivery moped is out in traffic for hours, parked unattended dozens of times a shift and left somewhere overnight that a thief can usually reach.
Hire and reward use
What permits the paid round.
The streets ridden
Dense centres rate above suburbs.
Hours and shift pattern
Evening work is its own rating.
Rider age and licence
Often the heaviest single field.
Overnight security
Where the machine stands.
What is carried
Food orders, parcels or documents.
How it works
From the First Drop to a Price
Getting a delivery moped quoted takes a few minutes. The questions are about the load, the driver and the round, and honest answers to all three produce a price that holds.
Tell us what you carry
Parcels, food, pallets or documents.
Give the driver details
Age, licence history and experience.
Describe the work
Restaurant orders, takeaway rounds, small parcels, documents or app jobs.
Compare what comes back
Cover level, goods limit and excesses.
What it covers
Cover That Fits a Small-Engine Round
Motorbike cover on hire and reward terms, sized for a machine that is cheap to replace but constantly exposed, with the load covered alongside.
| Section | Where it sits | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Injury and damage to others | Core | Included at every level of cover |
| Fire and theft | From the middle level | Subject to the security agreed |
| Accidental damage | Comprehensive only | Repairs to a delivery moped itself |
| Goods in transit | A separate cover | The load is not insured by the motor policy |
| Public liability | Usually added | Injury and damage at the doorstep |
| Windscreen and glass | Often included | Usually with its own excess |
| Breakdown and recovery | An add-on | A stopped vehicle stops the income |
Replacement matters more than value here. A stolen moped is not an expensive claim, but it stops the income immediately, so how quickly a policy puts you back on the road is worth more than a small saving on the premium.
What it leaves out
Where the Moped Policy Stops Short
A courier policy is built around carrying goods for payment. These are the points where a delivery moped falls outside it, and they are worth knowing before a claim rather than during one.
Carrying goods on a private policy
Hire and reward is a separate use class.
The parcels themselves
Goods in transit covers those, not the motor policy.
Wear, tear and mechanical failure
A policy is not a maintenance contract.
Loss of earnings, unless added
Downtime sits outside the standard sections.
Drivers not on the policy
Including somebody covering a round.
Riding a machine hired outside the policy
Hired mopeds need arranging properly.
Rounds a moped runs
The Rounds a Moped Is Built For
Small machines suit short, dense work, and that is exactly the kind of round they are put on.
Takeaway and restaurant orders
The commonest use by far.
Platform food rounds
Routed by app, paid per drop.
Small parcel hops
Local shops and offices.
Document runs
Short city journeys.
Pharmacy and prescription rounds
Regular local deliveries.
Shift work for a local firm
Machine supplied or owned.

Who it suits
Who Earns on a Moped
Moped delivery is often somebody’s first paid riding, which is part of why the rating looks the way it does.
Newly licensed riders
Starting on a small machine.
Takeaway delivery riders
Employed or self-employed.
Platform riders
Working several apps.
Part-time evening riders
A second income.
Local shop delivery riders
A round for one business.
Riders on hired machines
Supplied by the firm or a hire company.

Owned or hired
Owning the Moped vs Renting One From the Firm
A good many delivery riders never own the machine, and the insurance question changes completely depending on which arrangement you are in.
| Owned | Hired | |
|---|---|---|
| Who owns it | You | The hire firm or employer |
| Who insures it | You do | Usually them, but check |
| What you may still need | Everything | Your own liability and load cover |
| If it is stolen | Your claim | Their claim, and your excess |

Why a Small Engine Is Not Always Cheap
The rider, the hours, the streets, the security and the claims record. We do not print average premiums.
Why rider age dominates
Moped delivery is frequently a first riding job, taken young and taken soon after passing. Insurers hold long records on newly licensed riders in dense traffic, and that is reflected squarely in the price rather than in the engine size.
Why theft sits behind the rating
Delivery mopeds are identifiable, light and easy to move. They disappear from streets and shared parking constantly, which is why how and where the machine is secured is asked about in detail.

The details
Four Points a Moped Rider Must Settle
Every courier policy carries conditions, and on a delivery moped these are the ones that actually get tested. None is onerous; all are checked after a claim.
Declare the hire and reward use
An ordinary policy will not respond to paid work.
Size the goods cover to the load
A full van is worth more than people think.
Add every driver before they drive
Round cover included.
Secure the machine as described
The security you declared is a condition.

Reading Two Moped Quotes Line by Line
Two quotes for a delivery moped can look alike and behave very differently. These are the points that separate them.
The goods cover
- Whether goods in transit is included at all
- The limit per vehicle load
- Whether theft from an unattended vehicle is covered
The driving terms
- Who is permitted to drive
- Minimum age and experience conditions
- Whether relief drivers are allowed
On this work specifically
- Theft cover and security required
- Replacement machine offered
- Private riding included
Ask how quickly you get back on the road. A stolen machine stops the income that evening. Unfamiliar terms are explained in our plain English jargon guide.
Cutting costs
Keeping Moped Cover Affordable
The levers are security, riding years, a clean licence and an honest description of the round. We publish no savings figures.
Use a chain and ground anchor
Insurers ask, and it shows.
Build licensed riding years
The strongest lever over time.
Keep the hours accurate
Misdescribed shifts risk the claim.
Stay clear of points
They bite hard on a young rider.
Set the excess deliberately
It has to be affordable in a hurry.
Compare every renewal
Appetite for this work shifts yearly.

FAQs
Moped Courier Insurance FAQs
Answers on small engines, food rounds, hired machines, young riders and theft.
Why is a moped not cheap to insure for delivery?
Because the engine is the least of it. Delivery riding is urban, it runs late, the machines are stolen frequently and the riders are often newly licensed. Those four things sit above engine size in the rating, and together they carry the premium.
Do I need cover if the firm supplies the machine?
Ask them what their policy actually covers and get it in writing. Many arrangements insure the machine but not your liability or the food you are carrying, and the excess after a theft frequently lands on the rider rather than the firm.
Is a hot bag of food worth insuring?
The individual order rarely is. What matters more is liability if something goes wrong at a doorstep, and the value of the machine and your ability to keep riding, which is why the load limit here is usually modest.
Can I ride the moped when I am not delivering?
Where social and domestic use has been added. It is common on a courier policy but not guaranteed, and a quote written purely for the round would leave your own journeys uninsured.
Does it matter which app I ride for?
Less than how much you ride and when. Insurers price the hours, the streets and the drop density. Working three platforms in one evening is worth describing, because the pattern rather than the brand is what shapes the risk.
How much does security change things?
Noticeably. A machine chained to a ground anchor in a locked shed and one left on a shared forecourt are different risks, and the security you declare becomes a condition you have to keep to after a theft.
Can a newly licensed rider get delivery cover?
Yes, though the market is narrower and the price reflects it for the first year or two. Building unbroken riding years is the thing that moves it, and each renewal with no claims behind it helps.
What if I switch to a larger scooter?
Tell the insurer before you ride it. The machine is a rated field, so swapping up mid-term is an adjustment rather than a formality, and riding something not on the policy leaves you without cover.
Can I use an ordinary policy for moped delivery work?
No. A private or standard business policy excludes carrying goods for payment, so it would not respond to a claim made while you were working. Hire and reward cover is what a courier policy adds.
Does the policy cover the parcels?
Not the motor policy. Goods in transit is a separate cover sized to what is on board, and it is the section couriers most often turn out not to have when they need it.
Is business use on a car policy enough?
It is not. Business use covers driving for your own work; it does not cover carrying other people’s goods for payment, which is a different use class entirely.
What happens if the van is stolen with the load?
The vehicle falls to the motor policy and the load to goods in transit, if you have it. Whether the theft is covered often turns on the unattended vehicle condition.
What happens while the vehicle is off the road?
Nothing, unless you bought cover for it. Loss of earnings and replacement vehicle sections are optional, and for a courier with no second vehicle they are usually the add-ons worth having.
Does where I park overnight matter?
More than most couriers expect. A van with racking and a day’s parcels in it is a target, so the overnight address feeds directly into the theft rating.
Can I add another driver?
Usually, and it is common where a round is shared. Each driver is rated, so a younger or less experienced one will move the price more than a settled driver would.
Is app work rated differently from contract work?
The pattern differs rather than the cover. Describe how the work actually arrives, since insurers price stop counts and hours rather than the name of the platform.
