Taxi insurance
London Taxi Insurance
cover for drivers working the capital, where traffic, charges and parking all bear on the price
Hire and reward cover for a licensed driver working in London. The capital’s licensing, its traffic and the difficulty of parking overnight all feed the rating alongside the driver.
- Capital licensing
- Traffic and charging schemes
- Parking rated closely
- FCA authorised and regulated
Quick answerLondon is its own market for taxi cover. The capital licenses separately, the charging and emission schemes shape which car you can afford to run, and the traffic turns a modest mileage into a long working day. Parking is the quiet factor: somewhere off the street changes the theft rating more than most drivers expect. Tell us the licence and the car, and specialist UK brokers can quote.

London Driving, Six Things First
What driving the capital does to a taxi policy.
- Traffic is the working condition
- Slow miles, long hours
- The capital licenses separately
- Its own standards apply
- Charging schemes shape the car
- Newer and often electric
- Parking is the hidden factor

The basics
What Working London Does to a Quote
The cover is the same hire and reward cover a driver anywhere holds. What London supplies is the detail around it: the authority, the roads, the hours and where the vehicle sleeps.
The licensing authority
Which council issued the badge and plate.
Hire and reward use
The use class behind the cover.
Where the work is done
Central, inner or outer London.
Passenger liability
Injury to the people you carry.
Hours and mileage
London hours run long.
Overnight address
Street parking, a permit bay, a car park or a driveway.
How it works
From the Licence to a Price
Getting a London taxi quoted takes a few minutes. The questions are about the licence, the driver and the work, and honest answers to all three produce a price that holds.
Tell us the licence
Private hire, public hire, or both.
Give the driver details
Age, licence history and badge held.
Describe the work
App bookings, account work, airport transfers or rank work.
Compare what comes back
Cover level, excesses and add-ons.
What it covers
The Sections That Earn Their Keep on London Roads
The familiar motor sections written for paid passenger work, with the add-ons that keep a driver earning when the vehicle is off the road.
| Section | Where it sits | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Injury and damage to others | Core | Included at every level of cover |
| Fire and theft | From the middle level | Subject to the security agreed |
| Accidental damage | Comprehensive only | Repairs to a London taxi itself |
| Passenger liability | Included | Injury to people you carry |
| Windscreen and glass | Often included | Usually with its own excess |
| Public liability | Often added | Injury outside the vehicle |
| Loss of earnings | An optional extra | Income while off the road |
Charges are never insurable. Congestion and emission charges and their penalties are operating costs. Running a compliant vehicle is the only way to avoid them, which is why the capital’s drivers replace cars sooner than most.
What it leaves out
What a London Policy Will Not Pick Up
A taxi policy is built around carrying passengers for payment. These are the points where a London taxi falls outside it, and they are worth knowing before a claim rather than during one.
Driving without the right licence
Both the badge and the plate have to be current.
Carrying passengers outside the cover
Social use is not hire and reward.
Wear, tear and mechanical failure
A policy is not a maintenance contract.
Loss of earnings, unless added
Downtime sits outside the standard sections.
Anyone not named or permitted
Every driver has to be on the policy.
Charges and penalties for the zones
Operating costs, not insured losses.

Drivers Working This Part of the Country
More licensed drivers work in London than in any other UK city, and most of them are private hire rather than cab drivers.

Central or outer
Working London vs Driving Somewhere Quieter
Central work is slower, denser and more frequently interrupted. Outer London behaves more like a large suburban market.
| Central | Outer London | |
|---|---|---|
| Traffic | Dense, slow, constant | Lighter outside peaks |
| Journey length | Short and frequent | Longer, fewer |
| Parking overnight | Very difficult | Often a driveway |
| Charging zones | A daily consideration | Less so |

Why a London Badge Prices the Way It Does
The licence, the driver, the hours, the area worked and the claims record. We do not print average premiums.
Why parking does so much here
Most London drivers have no driveway, so the vehicle stands on a street overnight. That single fact moves the theft and damage rating more than anything else within a driver’s control.
Why slow miles still cost
Traffic produces low-speed contact rather than serious collisions, and a steady run of small claims moves a renewal further than one larger incident would.

The details
Four Things to Settle Before a London Shift
Every taxi policy carries conditions, and on a London taxi these are the ones that actually get tested. None is onerous; all are checked after a claim.
Keep the badge and plate current
Cover assumes both are in force.
Declare every driver
Including anyone covering a shift.
Tell the insurer about convictions
Motoring and licensing both.
Keep the vehicle compliant with the zones
Non-compliance is a daily cost, not a fine.

Two Quotes, Side by Side on London Work
Two quotes for a London taxi can look alike and behave very differently. These are the points that separate them.
The cover level
- Third party, fire and theft, or comprehensive
- Passenger liability limit carried
- Whether public liability is included
The driving terms
- Who is permitted to drive
- Minimum age and badge-held conditions
- Whether relief drivers are allowed
On this cover specifically
- Social and domestic use included
- Replacement vehicle offered
- Hours and mileage basis used
Ask what the excess is on a low-speed knock. It is the question drivers forget to ask. Unfamiliar terms are explained in our plain English jargon guide.

FAQs
London Taxi Insurance FAQs
Answers on capital licensing, charging schemes, traffic and finding somewhere to park.
Is London taxi insurance more expensive than elsewhere?
Generally, yes. Traffic density, high mileage, street parking and the sheer number of vehicles all push the same way, and the capital is consistently among the costlier places to hold a badge.
Are congestion and emission charges covered?
No. They are operating costs rather than insurable losses, and neither the daily charge nor a penalty attached to it is something a motor policy will pay.
Does parking on the street really matter?
It is one of the strongest levers available to a London driver. A vehicle behind a barrier or in a car park rates very differently from one left on a residential street overnight.
Is London licensed separately from the rest of the country?
Yes, the capital runs its own licensing regime with its own vehicle standards, which is why drivers here talk about a PCO licence rather than a council badge.
Do I need cover for airport work?
The same policy covers it, but mention it. Airport runs mean motorway mileage and time in feeder parks, which is a different pattern from city centre fares.
Are electric cars cheaper to insure in London?
Not automatically. Repair costs push one way and the charging schemes push the other, so it is worth comparing both rather than assuming an electric car saves money on the policy as well as the charges.
Can I work outside London on a capital licence?
Licensing rules govern where you may pick up rather than your insurer, but tell the broker if you regularly work beyond the boundary because the journey pattern changes.
How much does traffic affect the claims record?
More than drivers expect. Dense slow traffic produces frequent minor contact, and several small claims in a year will cost more at renewal than most people anticipate.
Can I use an ordinary car policy for a London taxi?
No. A private policy excludes carrying passengers for payment, so it would not respond to a claim made while you were working. Hire and reward cover is what a taxi policy provides.
Does the policy cover me driving privately?
Usually yes, where social use has been included, as it commonly is on a taxi policy. Check rather than assume, because a vehicle used only for work is sometimes quoted without it.
Are passengers covered if they are hurt?
Yes, that is what the passenger liability section is for. It carries through every level of cover, including third party only, because it is the point of a taxi policy.
What happens if my badge lapses?
Working with an expired badge is not permitted, and a claim made while it was out of date is very likely to be questioned. Diary the renewal well before it falls due.
What happens while the vehicle is off the road?
Nothing, unless you have bought cover for it. Loss of earnings and replacement vehicle sections are optional rather than standard, and for a driver with no second vehicle they are the ones that matter.
Does where I park overnight affect the price?
It does, and more than most drivers expect. Theft and damage risk sits where the vehicle sleeps, so a driveway and an unlit street can produce noticeably different terms.
Can I add a second driver?
Usually, and it is common where a vehicle is worked in shifts. Each driver is rated, so a younger or newly badged driver will move the price more than an experienced one.
Is app work rated differently from rank work?
It can be, because the journey pattern differs. Describe how the work actually comes in rather than giving a general answer, since insurers price the pattern rather than the platform.
