Taxi insurance
Temporary Taxi Insurance
hire and reward cover with passenger liability, bought by the day rather than the year
A standalone hire and reward policy with passenger liability, bought for a short period. It permits carrying fare-paying passengers under a council licence, which ordinary car cover and ordinary short term cover both exclude.
- Passenger liability included
- Not the same as short term car cover
- The badge is still required
- FCA authorised and regulated
Quick answerTemporary taxi insurance is hire and reward cover with passenger liability, bought for days or weeks rather than a year. Ordinary short term car cover will not do: the moment somebody pays for the journey, only a policy written for carrying passengers responds. The badge and the plate remain a separate matter, and no policy replaces them. Tell us the licence and UK providers can come back with quotes.

At a glance
Covering a Shift, in Brief
Six things that decide how temporary taxi insurance behaves, before any of the detail.
- Passenger liability is the difference
- Ordinary short term cover leaves it out
- The licence is separate
- Insurance does not replace a badge or a plate
- The plated vehicle is what is covered
- Not any car you happen to drive
- Private and public hire differ
- Say which licence is held
- Bought by the day or week
- For a shift, a fortnight or a gap
- No taxi bonus is earned
- Years come from annual policies
The basics
What Is Temporary Taxi Insurance?
It is the same hire and reward cover a licensed driver holds all year, written for a short period. What makes it a taxi policy rather than a short term car one is the passenger liability running through it.
Passenger liability
Injury to the people you carry.
Hire and reward use
What permits the paid journey.
The licence held
Private hire, public hire, or both.
The plated vehicle
Named on the policy.
A fixed start and end
Chosen when you buy it.
Standalone status
Independent of any annual policy on the vehicle.
How it works
How Does Temporary Taxi Insurance Work?
You give the licence details and the vehicle, choose the dates, and cover runs for exactly the period you picked and then stops.
You describe the licence
Private hire or public hire, and which council issued it.
You describe the vehicle
Registration, model and whose plated car it is.
You describe the driver
Age, badge history, claims and convictions.
You choose the period
The start time and how many shifts you need.
What it covers
What Does Temporary Taxi Insurance Cover?
Hire and reward motor cover with passenger liability, for a period you set. What it does not carry are the income protections an annual taxi policy can be built with.
| Section | Where it sits | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Passenger liability | The defining section | Injury to fare-paying passengers |
| Injury and damage to others | Core | Included throughout the period |
| Hire and reward use | The use class | What makes the paid journey insured |
| Fire and theft | Where offered | Subject to the level bought |
| Accidental damage | Comprehensive | Damage to the plated vehicle |
| Loss of earnings | Rarely on short cover | An annual policy option, not this one |
| The cover period | Fixed at purchase | It stops on the hour you chose |
Insurance and licensing are two different things. A policy lets you carry passengers for payment; the council badge and plate are what permit you to do it at all. Neither substitutes for the other, and both have to be in place.
Exclusions
What Temporary Taxi Insurance Does Not Include
Short taxi cover is narrowly drawn, and several of the limits are about the licence rather than the driving.
Work outside the licence you hold
Street hails on a private hire badge, for instance.
A vehicle that is not plated
Cover follows the licensed vehicle.
Drivers outside the age or badge terms
Newly badged drivers find fewer options.
Time off the road
Loss of earnings is an annual policy section.
Anything after the end time
Cover stops on the hour, not at the end of the shift.
Driving while unfit
Under the influence of drink or drugs.
Reasons drivers buy it
The Gaps Short Taxi Cover Is Bought to Fill
Almost all of it is bought because something has interrupted the normal arrangement, not because a driver wants a shorter policy.
Covering a driver who is off
Illness, holiday or an emergency.
A replacement vehicle
While the usual one is repaired.
A plate rented for a spell
Working somebody else’s licensed vehicle.
A newly badged driver
Starting before an annual policy is arranged.
Seasonal or weekend work
A few shifts rather than a year.
Trying the trade
Before committing to a full policy.

Who it suits
Who Temporary Taxi Insurance Suits
It is bought by licensed drivers and by the people who own the plated vehicles they work, usually at short notice.
Drivers covering a colleague
A shift or a fortnight.
Owners of a plated vehicle
Putting a relief driver on it.
Newly badged drivers
Before the annual policy starts.
Drivers renting a plate
Short arrangements with an operator.
Weekend and part-time drivers
Working the night economy.
Drivers between policies
Bridging a short gap.

Ordinary short cover or hire and reward
Short Term Car Cover vs Short Term Taxi Cover
These are confused constantly and they are not interchangeable. One of them stops responding the moment a passenger pays.
| Short term car | Temporary taxi | |
|---|---|---|
| Passengers paying a fare | Not covered | Covered |
| Passenger liability | Not included | Runs throughout |
| What it suits | Borrowing a car | Working a licensed shift |
| Licence needed | A full driving licence | A driving licence and a council badge |
Not carrying passengers for payment? See our short term car insurance page.

What Temporary Taxi Insurance Is Priced On
The licence, the driver, the vehicle, the area worked and the claims record. We do not print average premiums.
Why the badge matters more than the car
A licensed vehicle covers far more miles than a private one, at night, in traffic and with passengers aboard. How long the driver has held the badge tells an insurer more about that exposure than the make of the car does.
Why short taxi cover is dearer per day
It carries the same underwriting as an annual policy over a far shorter period, and the passenger liability does not get cheaper because the policy is brief. It suits a gap rather than a working pattern.

The details
Before You Take a Fare on Short Cover
Short taxi cover is quick to arrange and easy to get wrong, mostly because of the licence. Four things come up again and again.
Hold the licence the work needs
Insurance permits the paid journey; the council badge and plate permit the work.
Work only within your licence
A hail taken on a private hire badge sits outside both the licence and the policy.
Make sure the vehicle is the plated one
Cover follows the licensed vehicle, not whatever car is available.
Check the exact start and end time
Cover runs to the hour, and a shift that overruns is a shift uninsured.
Quote checklist
What You Will Be Asked for a Temporary Taxi Quote
Six things shape the quote: the licence, the driver, the vehicle, how long you need it, where it is kept, and any claims or convictions.
The car
Registration, model and whose plated vehicle it is.
The drivers
Everyone who will drive, and their licences.
Claims and convictions
Recent claims and any motoring convictions.
How it is used
Social, commuting or business, and mileage.
Where it is kept
Postcode and overnight parking.
The licence
Private hire or public hire, and the issuing council.
Comparing
Checking Temporary Taxi Quotes Side by Side
Four areas decide whether a policy suits you: the cover, the excess, the licence terms and the period terms. The price is only one of them.
The cover
- Level of cover and courtesy car
- Windscreen cover
- Driving other cars
The excess
- Compulsory excess
- Voluntary excess
- Windscreen excess
The licence terms
- That passenger liability is included
- Which licence type is accepted
- Whether a relief driver can be named
Terms
- No claims bonus protection
- European driving
- Paying monthly or upfront
Ask whether passenger liability is included. Without it the policy is not taxi cover at all. Unfamiliar terms are explained in our plain English jargon guide.
Cutting costs
How to Reduce the Cost of Temporary Taxi Insurance
The levers are buying the right period, building badge years and a considered excess. We publish no savings figures.
Buy the shifts you need at the start
Two short policies cost more than one.
Build unbroken badge years
They count on the annual policy too.
Choose the excess deliberately
A higher voluntary excess is a lever, worth using only at a level you could pay.
Keep the record clean
Night work makes that harder.
Move to an annual policy
Once the work becomes regular.
Declare everything up front
A refused claim costs far more.

FAQs
Temporary Taxi Insurance FAQs
Answers on the badge, passenger liability, covering a plate and what short cover will not do.
What is temporary taxi insurance?
Hire and reward cover with passenger liability, bought for a short set period rather than a year. It permits a licensed driver to carry fare-paying passengers for the days or weeks the policy runs, and then it ends.
Can I use short term car insurance instead?
No. Ordinary short term cover excludes carrying passengers for payment and carries no passenger liability. The moment a fare is charged it stops responding, which is the whole reason this is a separate product.
Do I still need a badge and a plate?
Yes. Insurance and licensing are different things. A policy makes the paid journey insured; the council licence is what permits you to do the work at all. No insurer can supply the second.
Can I cover somebody else on my plated vehicle?
Often yes, and it is one of the commonest uses. The driver has to hold the right badge and be named on the policy, and the vehicle has to be the licensed one.
Does it matter which licence I hold?
It does, and it is asked about directly. Private hire work has to be pre-booked through an operator, while public hire can also be hailed or taken from a rank. Work outside your licence sits outside the policy.
Will it cover me while the usual car is repaired?
It can, provided the replacement is a licensed vehicle. Cover follows the plated car, so putting the policy on an unplated one would not let you work.
Can a newly badged driver get short cover?
Sometimes, though the choice narrows considerably in the first year or so. Expect fewer options and a higher price, and be ready to give the badge dates as well as the licence ones.
Does it build a no claims bonus?
No. Taxi bonuses are earned on annual policies, so a run of short cover leaves you no further forward when you come to buy a full year. Badge years still count, which is the thing worth protecting.
Is loss of earnings included?
Rarely on short cover. Replacement vehicle and loss of earnings sections belong to annual taxi policies, so a driver relying on them should be looking at a full year rather than a fortnight.
Can I use it for app work?
Where the licence permits it, yes. The platform is how the job arrives; what matters to the insurer is the licence you hold and the pattern of the work, so describe both accurately.
What if a shift overruns the cover?
You are uninsured from the hour the policy ends, in exactly the way driving without cover would be. There is no grace period, so buy a little more time than you think you need.
Is it good value for a season?
For a few weeks it can be. Across a whole season the cost per week starts to favour an annual policy, so if the work looks like continuing it is worth pricing both properly.
Do operators accept short term cover?
Many do, but check before you buy. Operators and councils sometimes specify what they will accept as evidence, and a policy that does not meet it is no use however quickly it arrived.
Can I carry parcels on it too?
Not unless the policy says so. Carrying goods for payment is a separate arrangement again, and a taxi policy is written around passengers rather than deliveries.
What happens with points on my licence?
Declare them. Specialist insurers price convictions rather than refusing them, though the choice narrows as the record grows, and anything undeclared is a straightforward route to a refused claim.
How do I compare temporary taxi quotes?
Start with passenger liability and the licence type accepted, because a policy missing either is not taxi cover. Then compare the excess, the vehicle terms and the exact period.
