Car Courier Insurance

cover for delivering in an ordinary car, where business use alone is not enough

Hire and reward cover for a car used to deliver goods for payment. It is written for sameday and small-consignment work, sits alongside goods in transit for the load, and is rated on the driver, the radius and the value carried.

  • Sameday and urgent work
  • Business use is not the same
  • Private driving added on
  • FCA authorised and regulated

Quick answerDelivering in a car needs hire and reward cover, not business use. That distinction catches out more drivers than anything else in this trade: business use covers driving for your own work, while carrying somebody else’s property for payment is a separate class again. Car courier work is usually sameday, urgent and low in volume per job. Tell us the car and the jobs you take, and specialist UK brokers can come back with quotes.

Delivering food rather than parcels? Our food delivery insurance page covers that work.

At a glance

Delivering by Car: Six Starting Points

Six things that shape cover for a car earning on delivery work.

Business use is not enough
Paid carriage is its own class
Sameday work means long single runs
Motorway miles rather than kerbside drops
Loads are small but valuable
Documents, samples and spare parts
Private driving has to be added
A work-only quote leaves a gap
Radius is asked about directly
Local jobs or national runs
Mileage climbs quickly
Be realistic rather than hopeful

The basics

What Changes When a Car Starts Earning

Nothing about the car changes. What changes is the use, and an insurer prices use rather than intention. Once a job is paid for, the policy has to permit paid carriage or it will not answer at all.

Hire and reward use

What permits the paid job.

Sameday and urgent patterns

Long runs at short notice.

What sits in the boot

Small, often high value per item.

How far you go

A city, a region or the whole country.

Private use alongside

Added rather than assumed.

Annual mileage

Higher than an ordinary car by some way.

How it works

Car Courier Quoted in Four Steps

Four questions cover most of it: the vehicle, the load, the drivers and the cover level. The load does more to the price than the van does.

  1. Describe the vehicle

    Car, van, bike or moped.

  2. Describe the work

Sameday jobs, document runs, spare parts, medical samples or app deliveries.

  3. Add the drivers

Everybody who will be at the wheel.

  4. Read the terms

Not just the premium at the bottom.

What it covers

The Parts of the Policy a Sameday Car Uses

Ordinary motor sections written on hire and reward terms, with a goods cover beside them that is small in limit but often carrying items worth more than they look.

The sections behind a car on delivery work
SectionWhere it sitsWhat to know
Third-party coverThe base of any policyInjury and damage to other people
Fire and theft of the vehicleMiddle level upwardsRated on where it is kept
Own damageComprehensiveIncluding damage while loading
Load coverSeparateGoods in transit responds to the parcels
Public and products liabilityAdded alongsideDoorsteps and what you hand over
Personal accidentOptionalFor a driver with no sick pay
Loss of earningsAn add-onIncome while off the road

Small does not mean low value. A boot of spare parts, samples or documents can be worth more than a van full of parcels, and the goods limit should be set on what you actually carry rather than on the size of the car.

What it leaves out

What a Car Courier Policy Leaves Out

None of this is fine print for its own sake. These are the gaps that catch couriers out, and most of them close by declaring something at the quote.

Carrying for payment without the right cover

An ordinary policy will not respond.

The goods being carried

Insured separately, and sized to the load.

Mechanical and electrical failure

Unless caused by an insured event.

Lost income

A separate section, where offered.

Drivers outside the terms

Age and experience conditions apply.

Jobs taken outside the declared radius

National runs on a local quote sit awkwardly.

Jobs suited to a car

The Jobs That Suit a Car Rather Than a Van

Car courier work is defined by urgency and by value per item rather than by volume, which is why it prices differently from a parcel round.

Document and legal runs

Contracts that cannot wait for post.

Spare parts to garages

Vehicles waiting on one component.

Medical samples and supplies

Time-critical and often conditioned.

Sample and proof deliveries

Print, textiles and prototypes.

Sameday national runs

One pickup, one long drive.

App and platform jobs

Booked and routed digitally.

Carrying more than a boot load? See van courier insurance.

Who it suits

Who Delivers in an Ordinary Hatchback

Car courier work attracts people who want low overheads and flexible hours, and the vehicle is very often the one already sitting on the drive.

Self-employed sameday drivers

Working through job boards.

Legal and finance runners

Regular contract work.

Parts drivers for garages

Short urgent hops.

Medical courier drivers

Hospitals, labs and clinics.

Long-distance sameday specialists

High mileage, few jobs.

Part-time app drivers

Evenings and weekends.

Working entirely for yourself? See self-employed courier insurance.

Business use or hire and reward

Adding Business Use vs Buying Hire and Reward

This is the comparison that matters, and the two are not near neighbours. One covers your own work; the other covers carrying other people’s property for money.

What Sets the Price for a Sameday Car

The driver, the mileage, the radius, the value carried and the claims record. We do not print average premiums.

Why mileage does so much here

Sameday work is long-distance by nature. A car courier can cover in a month what a private motorist covers in a year, and exposure rises with every mile, so the annual figure is one of the heaviest lines on the quote.

Why the radius is asked separately

Local urban jobs and national motorway runs are different risks at the same mileage. The radius tells an underwriter which kind of driving fills the year.

The details

Four Things to Settle Before Taking a Job

Conditions are where courier claims are won and lost. The four below come up repeatedly.

  1. Hold hire and reward cover

It is what makes the work insured at all.

  2. Match the goods limit to the van

    Not to an average day.

  3. List everybody who drives

    Including occasional cover.

  4. Keep within the declared radius

Or tell the insurer the work has changed.

Quote checklist

Ready These Before Pricing the Car

None of it is hard to find. Having it to hand is the difference between a quick quote and a drawn-out one.

The vehicle

Car, van, bike or moped.

What goes on board

Sameday jobs, document runs, spare parts, medical samples or app deliveries.

Every driver

Including relief and weekend cover.

Where it sleeps

A driveway, a garage, a street or a parking space.

Load values

Typical and maximum.

Mileage and radius

Local rounds or long distance.

Comparing

Weighing Two Sameday Quotes Against Each Other

Set two quotes side by side and work through this. The differences will be here rather than in the premium.

Sections included

  • Level of cover on the vehicle
  • Goods in transit and its limit
  • Public liability, if included

The practical terms

  • Replacement vehicle provision
  • Overnight parking conditions
  • Excess on glass and on the main cover

On this work specifically

  • Social and domestic use included
  • Goods limit on small high-value items
  • National work permitted

Ask whether your own journeys are included. A work-only policy leaves the school run out. Unfamiliar terms are explained in our plain English jargon guide.

Cutting costs

Spending Less on Sameday Work

The levers are experience, a clean record, accurate mileage and a considered excess. We publish no savings figures.

Build clean years on this work

Courier experience is rated.

Report mileage honestly

A low figure that fails is expensive.

Keep the car off the street

Overnight still matters.

Raise the voluntary excess

Where you can carry it.

Size the goods limit sensibly

Not to the size of the boot.

Compare every renewal

This market moves a great deal.

FAQs

Car Courier Insurance FAQs

Answers on business use, sameday jobs, small loads, app work and private driving.

Can I just add business use to my car policy?

No. Business use covers driving in connection with your own occupation, such as visiting sites or clients. Carrying somebody else’s goods in return for payment is hire and reward, and only a policy written that way will answer a claim made on a job.

Is car courier work really insurable on a normal car?

Yes, and it is common. Hatchbacks and estates do a large share of sameday work in this country. What changes is the policy behind the car rather than the car itself, though the mileage involved will push the price above a private quote.

What sort of goods limit does a car need?

Smaller than a van, but rarely as small as drivers assume. A boot of spare parts, legal papers or medical samples can be worth a great deal, so set the limit on the value carried rather than on the space available.

Can I still use the car privately?

Where social and domestic use has been included, which is usual but worth confirming. A quote written purely for delivery work leaves your own journeys uninsured, and that is a gap most drivers would not notice until it mattered.

Does app delivery work count as car courier work?

It does where you are carrying goods for payment. The platform is simply how the job arrives. What an insurer wants described is the pattern: the hours, the distances and what is actually being carried in the car.

How is high mileage handled?

It is rated, and it is asked about directly. Sameday work produces far more miles than private motoring, so state a realistic annual figure. An understated one is a straightforward route to an argument at claim stage.

Do I need public liability for car courier work?

Not always, but it is often asked for by clients rather than insurers. It responds to injury or damage caused at a delivery point, which matters when you are walking into offices, hospitals and workshops all day.

What if the work changes from local to national?

Tell the insurer. Radius is a rated field, and a policy priced for city jobs sitting under a year of motorway runs is misdescribed. A mid-term adjustment is far easier than a disputed claim afterwards.

Why will my existing policy not do?

Because it excludes hire and reward. The moment somebody pays you to move something, an ordinary policy stops responding, whether the job came from an app or a contract.

How much goods cover do I need?

Enough to replace a full vehicle load rather than an average one. It is the maximum on board at any moment that matters, and peak season is when that figure is tested.

Does public liability come with it?

Not automatically. It responds to injury or damage at the delivery point rather than on the road, and for anybody carrying goods to doorsteps it is worth having.

Are convictions a problem?

They narrow the market and raise the price rather than ending the conversation. Declare everything, because an undeclared conviction is a straightforward route to a refused claim.

Is downtime covered?

Not as standard. Loss of earnings is an optional section and a replacement vehicle is another, and between them they decide whether a week in a bodyshop costs you a week of income.

Does the parking arrangement change the premium?

It is one of the main factors. A vehicle behind a gate, on a driveway or on a street will each be rated differently for the same driver and the same round.

Can more than one person drive?

Yes, provided each is declared on the policy. Insurers expect shared rounds in this trade, but everybody at the wheel has to be on the schedule before they drive.

Is peak season worth mentioning?

It is. Load values and hours both rise sharply in the run-up to Christmas, and a goods limit set for an ordinary week will be well short in December.
