Uber Insurance
cover for drivers taking work through apps, where the licence is the same but the pattern is not
Hire and reward cover for a licensed driver taking work through ride-hailing apps. The platform acts as the operator, but the vehicle and the driving are insured by the driver.
- Own and rented vehicles
- Multi-app working
- Flexible hours
- FCA authorised and regulated
Quick answerDriving through an app is licensed private hire work: the platform acts as the operator and every job is a booking. You still need your own hire and reward policy. What differs is the pattern, because app drivers switch between platforms, work irregular hours and often rent the car. Tell us the car and the apps, and specialist UK brokers can come back with quotes.

Six Things About Driving Through an App
What platform work changes, and what it does not.
- The app is the operator
- Which makes every job a booking
- You insure the vehicle
- The platform does not do it for you
- Most drivers use more than one app
- Say so at the quote
- Hours are irregular
- Which is normal and priced
- Rented vehicles are common
- And change what you need
- The car parks at home
- Which is what gets rated
The basics
What the Platform Does and What You Have to Do
The app arranges the work and holds the operator licence. The vehicle, the driving and the passengers in it are your responsibility to insure.
The platform as operator
It arranges, it does not insure your car.
Hire and reward cover
Yours to hold.
Passenger liability
Carried on your policy.
Multi-app working
Declared rather than hidden.
Rented vehicles
Check what the rental includes.
Private use
Added if you want the car off shift.
How it works
How Uber and App Cover Is Actually Arranged
The process is short. What matters is describing the licensing and the work accurately, because a taxi quote is built on those rather than on the car.
Which licence you hold
And which authority issued it.
Who drives the vehicle
You alone, or drivers on shifts.
Describe the work
App bookings, multi-app driving, airport runs or scheduled jobs.
Weigh the quotes up
Price against limits and conditions.
What it covers
The Sections Behind App-Based Work
A private hire policy in substance. What is worth reading is how the policy treats time logged on versus time driving privately, because apps blur the line.
| Section | Where it sits | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Liability to other road users | Every level | Injury and damage you cause |
| Theft and fire | Third party fire and theft upwards | Security conditions apply |
| Damage to app-based driving | Comprehensive | Repairs, or a settlement if written off |
| Passengers carried | Included | The cover that makes it a taxi policy |
| Glass cover | Commonly included | Often a lower excess |
| Replacement vehicle | An add-on worth pricing | A taxi off the road earns nothing |
| Legal expenses | Optional | Disputes and uninsured losses |
Do not assume the platform covers the gap. Some arrangements offer limited protection during a job, but they sit alongside your policy rather than replacing it, and the periods they cover are narrower than drivers expect.
What it leaves out
The Gaps App Drivers Most Often Fall Into
Every policy has edges. On app-based driving they sit in fairly predictable places, and none of them is a surprise once somebody has pointed them out.
An expired badge or plate
Cover assumes both are in force.
Use the policy does not describe
Private use needs adding, not assuming.
Breakdown and deterioration
Ordinary wear is not damage.
Income lost while off the road
Unless a loss of earnings section is taken.
Unlisted drivers
Including someone covering a shift.
Reliance on platform cover alone
It does not replace your own policy.
Ways app drivers work
One Platform, Several or a Rented Car
App driving covers several quite different arrangements, and which one you are in changes what you need.
Single platform drivers
One app, regular hours.
Multi-app drivers
Switching for the best job.
Rental scheme drivers
The car comes with the work.
Own vehicle drivers
Their own car, plated.
Airport and long-run drivers
Higher mileage.
Part-time app drivers
Around another job.

Who it suits
Who Drives Through an App
App work brought a lot of people into the trade who would not have joined a traditional office, and the flexibility shows in the hours they keep.
Full-time app drivers
Long hours, high mileage.
Part-time app drivers
Evenings and weekends.
Rental scheme drivers
No vehicle of their own.
Drivers using several platforms
Whichever is busiest.
Airport-focused drivers
Transfer work.
Drivers new to the trade
App work as a first step.

Your policy or the platform
Your Own Cover vs What the Platform Provides
The two are not alternatives. One is the policy that makes you legal to work; the other is a supplementary arrangement with narrower limits and periods.
| Your policy | Platform cover | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Your hire and reward policy | A platform arrangement |
| When it applies | Whenever you are covered to drive | Usually during a job only |
| Who arranges it | You | The platform |
| Can you work without it | No | It is not a substitute |

Why App Drivers Are Priced on the Pattern
Hours, mileage, the area, the driver and the claims record. We do not print average premiums.
Why hours logged on matter
App driving produces irregular patterns: long weekends, quiet weekdays, late finishes. Insurers price the total exposure rather than a notional working week, so the hours figure matters.
Why mileage is higher than drivers think
Time spent driving to a pickup counts as much as the fare itself, and app work generates a good deal of it. Estimating low is a false economy.

Four Things an App Driver Should Settle First
These are the practical terms behind app-based driving. Easy to meet and easy to forget, which is exactly why they are worth listing.
Renew the licence on time
A lapse is a cover problem, not just a licensing one.
Add drivers before they drive
Not after the first shift.
Declare points and cautions
They are rated, not automatically refused.
Declare all the platforms you use
Multi-app working is normal but has to be stated.

Gather This Before Quoting App Work
A broker will ask for all of this. Gathering it first turns several calls into one.
Who drives
You alone, or drivers on shifts.
Licensing authority
App bookings, multi-app driving, airport runs or scheduled jobs.
Vehicle details
Including the plate and any adaptation.
Overnight parking
A home driveway, a garage, a street or rental scheme parking.
The cover you want
And the excess you can carry.
Record over recent years
Claims, points and refusals.
Comparing
Two Quotes, Side by Side on App Driving
Price is the easy part to compare. What follows is the rest of it, and it matters more.
Who is covered
- Named drivers or any permitted driver
- Age and experience limits
- Cover for drivers on shifts
What it pays
- Passenger and public liability limits
- Excesses, compulsory and voluntary
- Whether a replacement vehicle is included
On this cover specifically
- Multi-app working accepted
- Rental vehicles covered
- Hours basis used
Ask whether working across several apps is allowed. Not every policy assumes it. Unfamiliar terms are explained in our plain English jargon guide.
Cutting costs
Paying Less on App Work Next Year
The levers are accurate hours, badge years, telematics and a clean record. We publish no savings figures.
Give honest hours and mileage
Understating costs you at claim.
Build badge years
They count quickly.
Use telematics early on
Then review.
Park securely
Overnight is what is rated.
Review the excess
Small claims are expensive here.

FAQs
Uber Insurance FAQs
Answers on platform cover, working across apps, hours logged on and rental cars.
Does the app insure me?
Not for the vehicle or for your driving generally. Some platforms provide limited protection during a job, but it sits alongside your own hire and reward policy rather than replacing it.
Is app work private hire?
Yes. The platform holds the operator licence and every job is a booking, which is exactly what a private hire licence permits. The badge and plate requirements are the same.
Can I work across several apps?
Most drivers do, and it needs declaring rather than assuming. Using more than one platform affects the hours worked and the journey pattern, and those are exactly what the policy is priced on.
What if the car is rented through a scheme?
Check carefully what the rental includes, because arrangements vary. Some include cover and some expect you to arrange it, and assuming the wrong one is an expensive mistake.
Do I need cover when logged off?
If you use the car privately, yes, through social and domestic use on the policy. A policy written only for hire and reward leaves your own journeys out.
How should I estimate mileage?
Include the driving to pickups, not just the fares. App work generates more unpaid mileage than most drivers realise, and understating it is a disclosure problem.
Is app driving rated worse than office work?
Not inherently. What matters is the hours, the mileage and the area, and an app driver working days in the suburbs is a different risk from one working city centre nights.
Can I start driving before the policy is live?
No. Cover has to be in force before you accept the first booking, and the badge and the plate both have to be current alongside it. Starting a shift while any of the three is outstanding leaves you working uninsured.
Is a normal car insurance policy enough for app-based driving?
It is not. Carrying fare-paying passengers is excluded from a private policy, so the cover would simply not respond. The whole point of taxi insurance is that use class.
Can I drive the vehicle when I am not working?
Where social and domestic use has been added, yes. It is normal on a taxi policy but it is worth confirming rather than assuming, particularly on a cheaper quote.
Is passenger injury included at every level?
It is. Even third party only carries it, because cover for the people you carry is what makes the policy a taxi policy rather than a car one.
Do penalty points make cover impossible?
No, though they narrow the market and raise the price. Declare everything, including anything from the licensing authority, because an undeclared conviction is a straightforward route to a refusal.
Am I paid while the car is being repaired?
Only if you took a loss of earnings or replacement vehicle section. A taxi off the road earns nothing, so for many drivers it is the most valuable add-on on the policy.
How much does the overnight address matter?
Enough to be worth thinking about. It is where the vehicle spends most of its life, so the postcode and the parking both feed the rating.
Can the vehicle be driven in shifts?
Yes, where every driver is on the policy. Shift working is normal, but a driver who is not listed is not covered, however briefly they take the wheel.
Does it matter which app I work through?
Less than how you work. The mix of pre-booked, rank and street work is what shapes the risk, and that is what an insurer wants described.
