cover for electrical work on vehicles, where a fault can show up long after you have finished

Motor trade cover for a business doing auto electrical work. Alongside road risk and tools it has to deal with the consequences of electrical faults arising after the work is finished.

  • Workshop and mobile work
  • Diagnostic equipment
  • Products liability emphasised
  • FCA authorised and regulated

Quick answerAuto electrical work carries a particular exposure: a wiring fault can cause a fire days or weeks after the vehicle leaves. Products liability is what responds, and it matters more here than in most of the trade. Diagnostic equipment is the other large value. Tell us the work and the kit, and specialist UK brokers can come back with quotes.

General mechanical work too? Our service and repair insurance page covers full workshops.

The basics

What Electrical Work Changes About the Exposure

Most trades find out quickly whether the job was right. Electrical work does not always, which is why the liability section rather than the property section is the one to read.

Products liability

Faults arising after the work.

Diagnostic equipment

Declared, often with its own limit.

Trade road risk

Testing customer vehicles.

High-voltage systems

Electric and hybrid work.

Public liability

Working at customer premises.

Tools and equipment

Beyond the diagnostic gear.

How it works

From the Trade Description to a Price

Getting an auto electrical business quoted takes a few minutes. The questions are about the trade, the people and the premises, and honest answers to all three are what produce a price that holds.

  1. Tell us the trade

What the business actually does day to day.

  2. List who drives

    Names, ages and licence history.

  3. Describe the work

Fault finding, wiring, immobilisers, lighting or electric vehicle work.

  4. Compare what comes back

Levels of cover, limits and excesses.

What it covers

What an Auto Electrician’s Policy Needs

Road risk, tools and liability, with the liability side weighted more heavily than it would be for a general repairer.

The sections an auto electrical business relies on
SectionWhere it sitsWhat to know
Road riskThe core sectionDriving customer and stock vehicles on the road
Third-party liabilityEvery levelInjury and damage you cause to others
Third party fire and theftMiddle levelAdds fire and theft of vehicles in your charge
Comprehensive road riskHighest levelAdds accidental damage to those vehicles
Public liabilityArranged alongsideInjury to customers and visitors
Employers liabilityNormally needed with staffInjury to people who work for you

The fire may happen a week later. A wiring fault that starts a fire after the vehicle has gone home is a products liability claim, and it is the scenario this trade most needs to be insured for.

What it leaves out

What an Auto Electrician’s Policy Leaves Out

A motor trade policy is built around the business. These are the places where an auto electrical business is outside it, and they are worth knowing before a claim rather than during one.

Vehicles you own privately

A trade policy is for vehicles held for the business.

Use outside the declared trade

Social driving unless it has been added.

Faulty work itself

Redoing the job is yours; the damage it causes may be covered.

Wear and mechanical failure

A trade policy is not a warranty.

Unlicensed or excluded drivers

Everyone driving has to fall inside the terms.

The cost of putting the wiring right again

The consequences may be covered; the rework is not.

Kinds of electrical work

Fault Finding, Installation and High-Voltage Systems

The work ranges from tracing a bad earth to working on traction batteries, and the exposure rises sharply at the top of that range.

Diagnostics and fault finding

Tracing rather than fitting.

Wiring and rewiring

Repairs and looms.

Alarms and immobilisers

Security installation.

Lighting and auxiliary systems

Beacons, bars and conversions.

Electric and hybrid work

High-voltage systems.

Commercial vehicle electrics

Tail lifts, fridges and beacons.

Fitting accessories generally? See accessory fitter insurance.

Who it suits

Who Does Auto Electrical Work

It is a specialism rather than a general trade, and the businesses doing it range from one mobile technician to a workshop serving other garages.

Diagnostic specialists

Taking work other garages cannot.

Mobile auto electricians

Working at the customer.

Workshop-based electricians

A unit and a ramp.

Security installers

Alarms, trackers and immobilisers.

Electric vehicle specialists

High-voltage trained.

Commercial vehicle electricians

Fleet and bodybuilder work.

Electrical or general repair

Electrical Specialism vs General Repair Work

The property side is similar. The liability side is not, because an electrical fault behaves differently from a mechanical one.

What Sets the Price for an Auto Electrician

The work carried out, equipment values, liability limits, training and the claims record. We do not print average premiums.

Why liability limits lead here

A vehicle fire traced to wiring can destroy a car and whatever it was parked next to, and that claim lands on the liability section rather than on anything you own.

Why training is asked about

High-voltage work on electric and hybrid vehicles is a distinct qualification, and an insurer would rather see it evidenced than assume it.

The details

Four Things an Auto Electrician Should Confirm

Every motor trade policy carries conditions, and on an auto electrical business these are the ones that actually get tested. None of them is onerous; all of them are checked after a claim.

  1. Keep the driver list current

New staff need adding before they drive.

  2. Meet the security conditions

Gates, alarms and key storage as described.

  3. Declare the turnover honestly

    It is checked at renewal.

  4. Declare high-voltage work

Electric vehicle systems are a separate activity.

Quote checklist

What a Broker Asks of an Auto Electrician

Have these ready before you start and quoting an auto electrical business takes minutes rather than a morning.

The trade you carry on

Fault finding, wiring, security installation or electric vehicle work.

Everybody who drives

Names, dates of birth and licence details.

Turnover

Last year and the year expected.

Where vehicles are kept

A workshop unit, a van or a secured home workshop.

Claims in recent years

Including ones you paid yourself.

Cover level wanted

Road risk only, or premises as well.

Comparing

Reading Two Quotes on the Electrical Terms

Two quotes for an auto electrical business can look alike and behave very differently. These are the points that separate them.

The cover level

  • Road risk only, or premises included
  • Third party, fire and theft, or comprehensive
  • Whether stock in trade is covered

The driving terms

  • Who is permitted to drive
  • Minimum age and licence conditions
  • Whether customers may drive

On this trade specifically

  • Products liability limit
  • High-voltage work accepted
  • Diagnostic equipment limit

Ask what the products liability limit is. A fire after the job is the claim that matters. Unfamiliar terms are explained in our plain English jargon guide.

Cutting costs

Bringing an Auto Electrician Premium Down Over Time

The levers are job records, training evidence, equipment security and a clean record. We publish no savings figures.

Document every job

It is the defence against a later fault.

Keep training current

Particularly high voltage.

Secure the diagnostic kit

It is the theft target.

Use quality components

Cheap parts cause later faults.

Carry the right liability limit

Rather than the default.

Compare every renewal

Specialist trades are priced inconsistently.

FAQs

Auto Electricians Insurance FAQs

Answers on electrical faults, fires after work, diagnostic equipment and electric vehicles.

What happens if a vehicle catches fire after my work?

That is a products liability claim, and it is the scenario this trade most needs cover for. The job record showing what was done and what was used is the first thing anybody will ask for.

Is my diagnostic equipment covered?

Within the tools section, subject to the single item limit. Diagnostic platforms frequently exceed the standard figure, so list them individually rather than relying on a total.

Do I need special cover for electric vehicles?

The work needs declaring, and insurers will ask about training. High-voltage systems are a distinct activity rather than an extension of ordinary auto electrical work.

Am I liable if an alarm I fitted drains a battery?

The cost of putting your own installation right is yours to carry. Damage caused beyond that, or a consequential loss such as a customer stranded and recovered, is where the liability sections come in and why they are worth having.

Can I road test customer vehicles?

Yes, with trade road risk on the policy. Electrical work often needs testing under load, so it is not an optional part of the cover for this trade.

Does mobile work change anything?

It moves the exposure to the customer’s property and puts the equipment in a van overnight. Both need declaring, and the tool conditions become more important.

Is fitting lighting and beacons covered?

Where the trade description includes it. Auxiliary lighting and conversions touch the vehicle’s systems, so it is worth being specific rather than describing the trade broadly.

How long does products liability reach back?

It generally responds to claims made while the policy is in force, which is why keeping cover running after you stop trading is something to think about rather than assume.

Do I need motor trade insurance for an auto electrical business?

If you drive vehicles that belong to other people as part of the business, an ordinary policy will not respond. Motor trade cover is written around vehicles in your custody, which is the position almost every trade ends up in.

What is the difference between road risk and combined?

Road risk covers the driving alone. Combined adds the premises, the stock, the tools and the liabilities into one policy. Which you need follows from whether you work from a site of your own.

Can I put my own car on the policy?

Usually yes, as a declared vehicle. It is often cheaper than a separate private policy, though the terms differ, so compare the two rather than assuming one wins.

Does it cover customers driving on a test drive?

Where demonstration cover has been included, yes. It is not automatic on every policy, so ask directly rather than finding out when somebody has already pulled off the forecourt.

Are the vehicles on my premises covered overnight?

Under a combined policy, usually yes, subject to the security conditions agreed. Under road risk alone, the driving is covered but the vehicles sitting on site generally are not.

Where must keys be kept?

Away from the vehicles and secured, and the policy will state exactly how. Key security is one of the commonest conditions in this trade and one of the commonest reasons a theft claim is questioned.

Can I use trade plates on any vehicle?

Only for genuine trade purposes and within the rules attached to them. Insurers expect the plates to be used properly, and misuse is both a licensing matter and a cover problem.

How quickly can cover start?

Often the same day once the details are in. What slows it down is missing driver information, so gather that before you start rather than partway through.
