The basics

What Is Campervan Insurance?

Motor insurance for a van designed or fitted out for sleeping and travelling. It recognises the living area, the kit inside and how the van is used for leisure, which a standard car or van policy may not.

Other road users

Injury and damage to third parties, the legal minimum.

The campervan

Damage, fire and theft, depending on the level of cover.

Contents

Belongings, bedding and cooking kit, with limits on valuables.

Awnings and accessories

Awnings, bike racks and roof boxes, where included.

The living area

Pop-top roofs, fitted furniture and appliances.

Touring extras

European cover and breakdown, where added.

How it works

How Does Campervan Insurance Work?

You enter the registration, describe the van and how you use it, choose the cover and extras, and brokers come back with quotes.

  1. You enter the registration

The van is identified, including its make, model and year.

  2. You describe how you use it

Daily driving, weekends away, long tours, or time abroad.

  3. You describe the van

Factory-built or converted, any modifications, where it is kept and its security.

  4. You choose the cover

Third party, third party fire and theft or comprehensive, with any extras.

What it covers

What Does Campervan Insurance Cover?

Liability to others, the campervan depending on the level of cover, its contents and accessories, with extras such as agreed value and European touring.

Keys left in or on the van

Theft with the keys available can be excluded.

Undeclared modifications

Changes the insurer was not told about.

Wear, tear and damp

Renting the van to others needs specialist cover.

Camper or car cover

Campervan Insurance vs Standard Car or Van Cover

A standard policy may insure the vehicle but not the living area, the kit inside or the way a camper is used. Campervan cover is designed around those.

Cost

What Campervan Insurance Is Priced On

The van’s make, model, value and age, your record, where it is kept, its security and how you use it. We do not print average premiums.

Why the van leads

Popular campervan models can be targets for thieves, and high-value factory builds cost more to repair or replace, which feeds the price.

Why use and storage matter too

Daily driving, mileage and where the van is parked overnight all feed the rate.

What the quote is rated on

  • The driverAge, licence, recordRate
  • SecurityTracker, alarm, locksRate

  • UseMileage, daily driving, abroadAdjust
Security fitted can change both the price and the conditions

Limited mileage

Some insurers offer lower terms for fewer miles.

Club membership

Some insurers look favourably on owners’ club members.

Accessories

Adding bikes and kit to the contents cover adds to the price.

Security

The Security Conditions That Decide a Campervan Theft Claim

Campervan theft claims can turn on whether the security on the schedule was fitted and in use. Four points come up again and again.

  1. Fit the security the insurer asks for

Some insurers ask for an approved tracker, alarm or immobiliser on higher-value campers.

  2. Use it every time

Where the schedule names a steering lock or other device, some policies require it in use whenever the van is left.

  3. Keep the keys safe

Theft using keys left in or near the van can be excluded, including keys taken from an unlocked home.

  4. Park where you said you would

A driveway, garage or secure site declared on the policy. Tell the insurer if that changes.

Quote checklist

What You Will Be Asked for a Campervan Quote

Six things shape the quote: the van, its value, any modifications, where it is kept, its security, and how you use it.

The van

Registration, make, model and year.

Its value

Market or agreed, with evidence for classics.

Modifications

Any changes from standard.

Where it is kept

Driveway, garage or storage site.

Security

Tracker, alarm and locks.

How you use it

Mileage, daily use, trips abroad.

Comparing

Checking Campervan Quotes Side by Side

Four areas decide whether a policy suits your campervan: the cover, security terms, contents and kit, and touring. The price is only one of them.

The cover

  • Third party, fire and theft or comprehensive
  • Market or agreed value
  • Windscreen cover

Security terms

  • Tracker or alarm requirements
  • Key conditions
  • Overnight parking rules

Contents and kit

  • The contents limit
  • Awnings and bike racks
  • Single-item limits

Touring

  • European days
  • Breakdown cover
  • Full-time living

Read the security conditions before you buy. They can matter more to a theft claim than the value. Unfamiliar terms are explained in our plain English jargon guide.

Cutting costs

How to Reduce the Cost of Campervan Insurance

The levers are security, secure parking, limited mileage, an accurate value and the excess. We publish no savings figures.

Fit approved security

A tracker or alarm can help the terms.

Park off the road

A driveway or garage overnight can help.

Choose limited mileage

If you drive less, some insurers offer lower terms.

Insure the right value

Too high wastes premium; too low invites a reduced claim.

Join an owners’ club

Some insurers look favourably on membership.

Choose the excess deliberately

A higher excess is a lever, worth using only at a level you could absorb.

FAQs

Campervan Insurance FAQs

Answers on security, contents, awnings, touring and everyday use.

What is campervan insurance?

Motor insurance for a van designed or fitted out for sleeping and travelling. It covers your liability to others and, depending on the level of cover, the van, its living area, contents and accessories.

Can I use car or van insurance for my campervan?

A standard policy may not recognise the living area, the kit inside or leisure use. Campervan cover is designed for those, so tell the insurer the vehicle is a campervan.

Can I use my campervan as an everyday vehicle?

Yes, if the policy allows it. Declare daily driving and commuting, as some policies are priced for leisure use and limited mileage, and the wrong use can affect a claim.

What security do insurers ask for?

It depends on the van and its value. Some insurers ask for an approved tracker, alarm or immobiliser on higher-value campers, and set conditions on keys and parking.

Are my belongings covered?

Some policies include contents such as bedding, cooking kit and personal items, up to a limit. Valuables and single items can have lower limits, so check the terms.

Is my awning covered?

Some policies include awnings, sometimes with a separate limit, and others offer them as an extra. Check the terms if you use a drive-away or wind-out awning.

Are bikes on a rack covered?

Bikes and racks can be covered under contents or accessories on some policies, sometimes with conditions such as being locked. Check the limit and any security rules.

Can I take my campervan abroad?

Some policies include European touring for a set number of days and others offer it as an extra. Check the countries and days covered before you travel.

What is agreed value cover?

A value set with the insurer at the start of the policy, backed by photos and a valuation. It can suit classic or high-value campervans that are hard to value after a loss.

Do modifications affect my insurance?

Yes. Changes such as new wheels, suspension, solar, or interior work are modifications, and undeclared modifications can affect a claim. Tell the insurer before or when you make them.

Can I live in my campervan full time?

Full-time living is a different risk from leisure use. Tell the insurer, as some policies do not cover it and a specialist policy may be needed.

Can I hire my campervan out?

Not on a standard policy. Renting the van to others needs specialist hire cover, and hiring it out without telling the insurer can leave you uninsured.

Does limited mileage cover make sense?

It can if you drive less. Some insurers offer terms based on a mileage limit, but going over it can affect a claim, so estimate realistically.

I converted my van myself. Is this the right page?

Self-builds and vans still being converted have their own considerations, such as cover during the build and valuing the work, covered on our camper conversion insurance page.

Does campervan insurance include breakdown cover?

Not always. Breakdown cover can be added, and it is worth checking the provider can recover your van and helps with onward travel if you are away from home.

How do I compare campervan insurance quotes?

Look beyond the price to the security conditions, the valuation basis, contents and accessory limits, European touring, mileage limits and the excess you would pay on a claim.
