VW Camper Insurance

cover for an older Volkswagen camper, where the value is going up rather than down

Cover for an older or classic Volkswagen camper. It insures the vehicle and the conversion together, usually on an agreed value fixed in advance, and often on a limited mileage basis with the van laid up over winter.

  • Agreed value, not market value
  • Limited mileage available
  • Restoration cover on request
  • FCA authorised and regulated

Quick answerAn older VW camper is not an ordinary vehicle to insure. Values have risen rather than fallen, the conversion is often worth more than the van beneath it, and a market valuation after a total loss is unlikely to buy anything like what you had. An agreed value, set with evidence before anything happens, is the thing to get right. Tell us the van and the mileage, and specialist UK brokers can come back with quotes.

At a glance

Classic VW Campers: Six Things First

Six things that decide how an older VW camper should be insured.

Market value will disappoint you
These vans appreciate, and valuations lag
Agreed value is the answer
Fix the figure with photographs and evidence
Limited mileage usually fits
Most do a few thousand a year at most
They are stolen to order
Security and storage are asked about closely
Declare the conversion fully
Interior, roof, engine and everything since
Laid-up cover over winter
Fire and theft without paying for road use

The basics

What Makes an Older VW Different to Insure

Two things, and they pull together. The value is rising rather than falling, and the van is a recognisable target. Between them they turn the settlement basis and the security into the whole conversation.

The value today

Which is rarely what you paid.

The conversion and interior

Often worth more than the shell.

Annual mileage

Usually low, and worth declaring.

Where it is kept

A garage is the best answer there is.

Work carried out

Restoration, engine, paint and bodywork.

Who drives it

Owners and anybody else permitted.

How it works

From the Conversion to a VW Camper Price

Getting a classic VW camper quoted takes a few minutes. The questions are about the vehicle, the conversion and the mileage, and the second of those is the one owners skip.

  1. Tell us the vehicle

    Make, model, year and engine.

  2. Describe the conversion

    Factory, professional or self-build.

  3. Describe how it is used

Weekends and shows, summer touring, occasional use or a van under restoration.

  4. Compare what comes back

    Settlement basis, limits and excesses.

What it covers

The Cover a Classic Camper Actually Needs

Ordinary motor sections, with the settlement basis doing the important work and a handful of add-ons that suit a vehicle used a few weeks a year.

The sections behind an older VW camper
SectionWhere it sitsWhat to know
Injury and damage to othersEvery level of coverThe part that cannot be removed
Fire and theftFrom the middle levelSecurity conditions apply
Accidental damageComprehensive onlyRepairs to a classic VW camper itself
Agreed valueArranged in advanceThe settlement figure, fixed in writing
Camping equipment and contentsA limit of its ownAwning, cooker, bedding, gear
European useDeclared, usually cappedCounted in days
Recovery and repatriationAn add-on worth pricingGetting the van and you home

Agreed value is the point of the exercise. On a van whose value has risen for twenty years, a market settlement will not replace what you had. Fix the figure in writing, with photographs and a valuation behind it.

What it leaves out

What an Older Camper Policy Turns Down

A campervan policy is written around sudden damage to a converted vehicle. These are the points where a classic VW camper falls outside it, and the conversion question is the one that catches people.

Damage to an undeclared conversion

The interior has to be on the policy to be covered.

Wear, corrosion and deterioration

Age is not an insured event.

Camping gear beyond the contents limit

Check the figure against what you carry.

Use outside the mileage declared

A limited mileage policy means what it says.

Living in it permanently

Full-time occupation is a different arrangement.

Damage during work by somebody uninsured

Restoration work needs its own arrangement.

The vans still on the road

The VW Campers Still Being Insured

What survives spans decades and conditions, and the state of the van decides the figure rather than the year on the plate.

Later water-cooled campers

Usable, and still appreciating.

Who it suits

The People Keeping These Vans Running

Older VW campers are kept by enthusiasts rather than used as transport, which is exactly why the policy looks different from an ordinary motor one.

Long-term enthusiasts

Vans kept for decades.

Restorers

Rebuilding a van over years.

Weekend and show owners

A few thousand miles a year.

Families with a summer van

Holidays and little else.

Owners of inherited vans

Keeping one in the family.

Club members

Rallies, shows and runs.

Agreed or market value

Agreed Value vs Market Value on a Classic

On an appreciating vehicle this is not a detail. It is the difference between replacing the van and being handed a figure that will not.

What Sets the Price on a Classic Camper

The value, the mileage, the storage, the security and the driver. We do not print average premiums.

Why low mileage helps so much

A van used a few weekends a year is exposed for a fraction of the time an everyday vehicle is, and insurers price that directly. A limited mileage policy is usually the right shape for an older camper, provided the figure is one you will keep to.

Why security is asked about in detail

Recognisable classics are taken deliberately rather than opportunistically. A garage, an immobiliser and a tracker all matter here more than they would on an ordinary vehicle.

The conditions

Four Things a Classic Owner Must Settle

Every campervan policy carries conditions, and on a classic VW camper these are the ones that get tested. None is difficult; all are checked after a claim.

  1. Declare the conversion in full

Interior, roof, electrics and anything fitted since.

  2. Keep to the mileage you agreed

Limited mileage cover is a condition, not a target.

  3. Use the security you declared

Immobilisers, trackers and where it is kept.

  4. Keep the agreed value current

Review it as the market moves.

Quote checklist

Gather This Before Quoting a Classic Camper

Have these ready and quoting a classic VW camper takes minutes rather than a morning.

The vehicle

Model, year, engine and the work carried out.

The conversion

Who did it, when, and what it included.

The value

The van and the conversion together.

Where it is kept

A garage, a locked yard, a driveway or the street.

Annual mileage

Realistic, not hopeful.

Who drives it

Ages and licence history.

Comparing

Reading Two Classic Camper Quotes Properly

Two quotes for a classic VW camper can look alike and behave very differently. These are the points that separate them.

How it would be settled

  • Agreed value, market value or new for old
  • Whether the conversion is included in the figure
  • The excess on the main sections

What else is covered

  • Camping equipment and contents limit
  • Awning and external equipment
  • European use and any day limit

On this vehicle specifically

  • Agreed value offered
  • Limited mileage and laid-up terms
  • Restoration and salvage retention

Ask whether you can keep the van after a total loss. On a classic, salvage retention matters. Unfamiliar terms are explained in our plain English jargon guide.

Cutting costs

Keeping a Classic Camper Affordable

The levers are storage, security, a realistic mileage and a documented value. We publish no savings figures.

Garage it

Nothing else moves it as far.

Declare the real mileage

A limit you will keep to.

Fit a tracker

These vans are taken to order.

Join an owners’ club

Some insurers recognise it.

Review the agreed value

As the market moves.

Lay it up over winter

Where you do not use it.

FAQs

VW Camper Insurance FAQs

Answers on agreed value, limited mileage, restoration, club membership and theft.

Why is agreed value so important on these vans?

Because the market has risen for years and a valuation carried out after a loss tends to lag behind it. An agreed figure, set with photographs and evidence beforehand, is what actually replaces the van you had.

How do I get a value agreed?

With evidence. Photographs inside and out, receipts for work done, a record of the restoration and, on a higher-value van, a written valuation. Insurers will usually ask for it to be reviewed every year or two.

Can I insure it while it is being restored?

Yes, and it is worth doing. A van part-built in a workshop is still exposed to fire and theft, and a policy written for road use may not answer while the work is in progress.

Is limited mileage worth taking?

Where the use genuinely is low, usually yes. It is a condition rather than an estimate though, so pick a figure with room in it rather than the lowest one you are offered.

Does club membership make a difference?

Some insurers recognise it, on the reasoning that club members look after and store their vehicles properly. It is worth mentioning at the quote rather than waiting to be asked.

What security should a classic camper have?

A garage if at all possible, an immobiliser, and a tracker on a higher-value van. These are recognisable vehicles that are taken deliberately, so security carries more weight here than on an ordinary vehicle.

Can I keep the van if it is written off?

Sometimes, and it is worth asking before you buy. Salvage retention matters on a classic, because a van beyond economic repair to an insurer may still be worth rebuilding to an owner.

Is the interior covered as well?

Where you have declared it. The conversion, the trim and anything fitted since are frequently worth more than the shell, and an undeclared interior is the commonest way a settlement falls short.

Can I insure a classic VW camper on an ordinary car policy?

No. A converted vehicle is not a car, and the interior is not part of a standard motor valuation. A campervan policy exists to insure the conversion alongside the vehicle it was built on.

What is agreed value and do I need it?

It is a settlement figure fixed with the insurer before any claim, supported by photographs and evidence. On a vehicle whose value is rising rather than falling it is the difference between a fair settlement and a disappointing one.

Is the camping equipment covered?

Up to a limit that is separate from the vehicle, and usually lower than owners expect. Awnings, cookers, bedding and outdoor gear add up quickly, so check the figure against what you actually carry.

Does a limited mileage policy save money?

It can, where the mileage genuinely is low. It is a condition rather than an estimate though, so agree a figure you will keep to rather than the lowest one offered.

Does owners’ club membership help?

Some insurers recognise it, particularly on classics, because club members tend to maintain and store their vehicles well. It is worth mentioning rather than waiting to be asked.

What about cover while it is being restored?

It is worth arranging. A vehicle off the road part-built is still exposed to fire and theft, and a standard policy written for road use may not answer while the work is going on.

Can I lay it up over winter?

Many insurers offer reduced cover while the vehicle is off the road, which keeps fire and theft protection running without paying for road cover you are not using.

Is European touring covered?

Usually, once declared, and normally with a limit on days. What is worth checking separately is recovery: getting a stranded campervan home is expensive and is often an add-on rather than standard.
