Looking to save money flying?

Tips that work and tips that don’t

In the ‘Age of Information’, it is baffling as to why there are customers that still resort to paying full-price for services they use. If there’s not a voucher code online somewhere, then there is a conversation thread from customers that have used the same service prior to you. Failing that, there are sites that offer tips on how to save yourself money while making any purchases. This is certainly the case when it comes to travel, and more specifically flying.

So how do you know who to trust? Don’t be mistaken, this isn’t a case of somebody intentionally trying to deceive you, however there are some tips that have circulated online that are taken for fact, purely because of the length of time they have been around. One may even surprise you…

Stop deleting your internet history and cookies to book a flight!

This is one of the more controversial money-saving tips to be sceptical of, but the truth of the matter is that there isn’t any difference in price from whether you have visited the booking site before. Apparently, the price variance that you see when you return to a site is more down to fluctuating flight prices. The systems in place that calculate flight prices change quite regularly, meaning that there is never a guarantee of you getting the same price on a return visit.

Look at it positively, this is one thing you don’t have to worry about doing to get the best price. On top of this, you know that comparing flights online will provide you with the same results as putting the legwork in yourself.

The best days to fly may not be what you think

For those that can remember, fare prices used to be released by airlines on a Tuesday, creating the notion that Tuesdays are the cheapest days to book your flights. As the paragraph above has already stated, this is no longer the case as fare rates are released much more frequently than that. Despite this, there are still those who claim Tuesdays are still cheapest, even now! However, things like flying at night, or looking at alternative airlines for a return journey, are still points that can certainly reduce the price of your flights.

Do you have time?

One of the more significant money-saving advice for booking your flights, and one that still stands true, is booking indirect flights. This is for those more whose concerns are more around cost than time efficiency. Although it may mean that you won’t be getting to your desired destination as quickly as possible, you will be getting there with much more spending money in your bum-bag!

Moral of the story – just because a tip seems well established, it is always worth double checking things for yourself. Apart from comparing your flights of course, leave that to MyMoneyComparison.com!
