Guide To Changing A Tyre

GUIDE TO CHANGING A TYRE

The prospect of changing a tyre can be quite daunting if you have never done it before but the likelihood is that at some point in time all of us will need to do it! With that in mind we have come up with a simple and easy guide to help you out when changing a tyre.

You will need a few tools (namely a jack, and a wheel wrench) and, of course, your spare tyre. All of these should be in your car – refer to your car manual to find out where. It may also be worth carrying a pair of gloves and something to kneel on in the car as you are likely to get your hand and knees dirty otherwise!

For simplicity sake we have broken the procedure down into stages:

  1. Make sure your car is parked on a level, firm surface. Do not attempt to change a tyre on an uneven surface! Put your hazards on if you are on a busy road and use a warning triangle if available.
  1. Ensure your handbrake is on and the car is in gear, you do not want it to be moving around on the jack.
  1. Locate and remove the spare wheel and jack in your vehicle. Before you start doing anything else you should secure the vehicle so that it will not roll by using metal wheel chocks. If you don’t have these then wooden wedges or bricks will suffice. The idea is to place these so that they block the wheels on the opposite end of the car from the end that you are raising.
  1. Place the jack into the correct position under the jacking point (use the car owners manual or simply take a look under the chassis to locate the jacking point). Take some of the cars’ weight by turning the handle clockwise but do not lift it off the ground just yet!
  1. Keep the wheel on the ground while you to loosen the wheel nuts, use a wheel wrench to do this. Once that is done you can lift the car off the ground so that the tyre you want to change is suspended.
  1. Now you can remove the wheel nuts completely – remember to keep the nuts together so you do not lose them – and remove the tyre from the vehicle. Leave the tyre in a safe place lying flat.
  1. You can now mount the spare tyre. Align the bolt holes on the wheel to the holes on the vehicle wheel hub and position the wheel nuts back in place. Tighten these with your fingers initially and then use the wrench. Do not tighten completely until on the ground. Reference your car manual to see in which order you should fasten them – this is normally in a criss-cross pattern.
  2. Lower your car back to the ground and make sure the wheel nuts are completely tightened.

If you are at all in doubt or encounter any problems, call for roadside assistance.
